Terrible news. My condolences to John's loved ones and colleagues. He ran Intrade with competence and vigor.

My condolences to his family. Last time I checked John owned 70% of Intrade. Those shares will probably go to his wife. Given the unusual circumstances of his death and the current state of Intrade, I wouldn't hold any money in Intrade that I couldn't afford to lose.

Good point - I'm surprized there hasn't been movement on the short dated intrade in business stocks.

First of all you've been nay-saying Intrade for years seemingly without the slightest clue how small businesses and start-up companies work. Second of all, it's incredibly distasteful to do it in this thread of all places. Incredibly distasteful. And finally, and most importantly, your point makes no sense whatsoever. How do you propose that our segregated funds, in the possession of a bank, would be in danger by a change of ownership? You are implying that the new owner of the company would break Irish law, defraud customers, and destroy a brand that possesses value. Your lack of decency is only surpassed by your complete lack of business sense. Troll elsewhere.

According to some stats I've seen, since 2004, about 2000 people have made it to the summit of Everest and 189 did not make it back alive. I'm sure Mr. Delaney of all people was aware he had a not insignificant chance of not making it back.

So sad he was one of the unfortunate ones, hopefully his legacy will live on at this site for many years. Condolences to his family, friends, and employees of Intrade.

Very sad.

How does his death effect the future of this website? He seemed to have a large role in its operations and management.

Given what King James pointed out about the dangers inherent in climbing Everest, it bears mentioning that John Delaney was a brave man. Certainly braver than I. I know his family will always be heartbroken. But they will also always be very, very proud. What a man.

I have been out of touch with Intrade since around the beginning of 2011.

Logging in today, I was shocked and dismayed to learn of John Delaney's untimely and tragic passing last May.

I first became aware of John in March 2002 when I began trading with TradeSports ("TS"). That fall, I phoned him when, due to a TS trading outage, I figured that I had lost a little over $200 when their systems went down and there was no opportunity to exit or add to positions for an NFL game.

In a very cordial and warm conversation with him, he brought up the possibility that I might "flame" TS on the net and therefore he offered me a "trading credit" for a "loss" that only I had calculated. Flaming TS on the net had never crossed my mind and I really, at that time, did not understand what his offer of a trading credit was but I readily agreed to it. John seemed pleased that I would accept his offer. He also suggested that we meet during one of his upcoming trips to the States but not knowing him very well, I probably responded unenthusiastically . . . my loss!

Over the ensuing years, I exchanged several emails with John, mostly related to technical difficulties that I had given up on solving myself. I always received back a timely, articulate, and sometimes funny email. Sometimes he would share an aspect of his personal life, such as a trip that he had taken or was planning to take.

As I write this, it has only been just a short time since I first read of his passing. I am still somewhat in shock and very saddened.

Each of us can probably think back on individuals whom we have met, one way or another, that made a lasting impression. For me, John Delaney will always be one of those individuals and, by my opinion, a true visionary.

My heartfelt condolences go out to John's family and to all those whose lives he touched in one way or another.

Rest in Peace, John.
